Executions

Taking stock, 1936 was the year of the greatest incidence of repression in the capital and in the province of Burgos. There are records of 882 who were imprisoned and 140 who were executed. To these must be added the 21 teachers who were shot in the first months of the uprising.

The number of “disappeared”, probably executed, amounts to 386 individuals.

In 1937, year known as the Second Triumphal Year for the rebels, the activity of summary justice against the numerous detainees continued, although the number of those executed was no higher than 22. In 1938, 30 people were executed. In 1939, 82 executions were carried out in the last months of the conflict and in the first months of the post-war period. Between 1940 and 1941, 7 people were executed.

Deaths in prison

In addition to those who were executed, we must take into account those who died during their stay in Burgos prison, due to illnesses or other causes (excluding execution).

Between 1936 and 1941, the number of deaths in prison rose sharply year by year. In 1939, 6 people died, but in the following years this figure increased to 95 in 1942. The causes cited were varied: stroke, myocardial infarction, cerebral congestion, angina pectoris, anemia, pulmonary sarcoma, bronchopneumonia, tuberculosis, among others.

From 1943 onwards, the number of deaths dropped considerably, due to the upturn in the Spanish economic situation which was reflected in the health and food sectors.

The following table is just an approximation of the victims of the war and post-war periods, since there must have been many more.
